Mayor Urges Foreign Firms to Tender for Games Facilities
2002/09/01
As host city for the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing will soon
begin inviting international tenders for the building of
stadiums and gymnasiums for the event. Mayor Liu Qi confirmed
this during a meeting with Steve Bracks, premier of Australia's
Victoria State. Liu, also chairman of the Games' organizing
committee, said Beijing welcomed foreign companies which submit
tenders, adding that public bidding would present them with
(potentially) rich opportunities.
A total of 32 stadiums and gyms are needed for the Games.
Beijing will build 19 new stadiums and gyms, which will cost
about US$14 billion. They will be built by companies which win
the contracts in global bidding.
