Economic Growth Continues in Beijing's Rural Areas

Beijing's rural areas reported a gross domestic product
(GDP) of 30.44 billion yuan (US$3.81 billion) during the first
six months of this year, up 11.7 percent against the same
period last year. At the same time, agricultural restructuring
developed remarkably, with farmland under cash crops extended
by 400,000 mu (26,666.7 hectares), while grazing land grew by
80,000 mu to 5,333.3 hectares.
Beijing's township enterprises earned a total revenue of
68.25 billion yuan ($8.53 billion) during the period, up 20.7
percent compared with January-June, 2001. The economy of
Beijing's rural areas became more export-oriented, attracting
$560 million in investment from 288 foreign companies.
Meanwhile, the per capita income of farmers reached 3,342 yuan
($417.6), up 13.6 percent.
