Police Hammer Car Thieves and Robbers
2002/08/01
Thefts of vehicles, and robberies from cars, in the Chinese
capital have fallen by a dramatic 14 percent in the first half
of the year, compared with the same period of 2001, a city
police spokesman has announced.
Statistics show the police cleared 257 such cases in the
period, 36.7 percent more than during the first six months of
last year. In doing so, they broke 18 criminal gangs, arrested
252 suspects and recovered 458 stolen vehicles. Police success
was in part due to information from criminal sources. In all,
1,247 suspects were arrested before the end of June, 560 more
than between January and June last year, the spokesman
said.
