China Art Gallery Renovation
2002/06/01
In the past five years, the average number of annual
exhibitions at the China Art Gallery, currently being
renovated, reached 180, but the total number of visitors in
2001 was 100,000--a comparatively small figure against other
galleries.
Overall, say art observers, the gallery had little influence
on the general artistic scene because structurally it could not
meet the demands of major exhibitions and allegedly lacked a
"gallery culture". In addition, it has been claimed, too many
personal exhibitions lowered the gallery's stature. This is
said to have forced major exhibitors of more general themes to
turn to other galleries.
