Modern Signage Boost for Subway Stations

2002/04/01

requent subway users are benefiting from signage changes at Fuchengmen Metro Station, where new signs and guideposts indicating the location of North, South, East and West exits and other important information are now on public view. There are even indications of how much time a train will spend at each station on the route.

Many passengers, especially strangers to Beijing, are pleased by the signage, which include eye-catching tri-dimensional maps of the city and the Fuchengmen area, and information about stations each side of any particular station.

The Fuchengmen signs are experimental for one month and, if proven successful, will be used at the subway's other 38 stations. Old signage, arranged by individual stations, were said to be generally inconsistent and inconvenient.

The Metro Group intends to invest in excess of 10 million yuan on the overall project, which will require more than 100 new guideposts and other signage in accordance with the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system.
