Lions the Bridge of Peace

2002/04/01

wo Chinese lions are due to go to Afghanistan soon as friendship envoys. Beijing Badaling Safari World and the China Wildlife Conservation Association decided to donate the lions to Kabul Zoo after the death in February of 26-year-old one-eyed Marjon, the only lion in the Afghan capital's zoo.

Adbul Basir Hotak--counselor and charge d'affaires of the Embassy of the Interim Administration of Afghanistan in China  officially thanked the Safari World group and the association for the donation.

He said the people in Kabul would be "very happy" to see the two lions in the zoo because lions are symbols of love and peace.

Some international organizations have already given Kabul Zoo US$80,000 to improve facilities and cover feeding costs, money that will help look after the lions, added Hofak.
