Follow Lantern Flare Path to Sunflower's Dishy Surprises

2002/04/01

Haidian offers far more than just high-tech firms and factories. It also has more than a fair share of delightful restaurants, a good example being Sunflower Village Food Street. It's enough to make you see red!--which you cannot fail to do, though not in ire, for it's in and around this restaurant that you will find almost countless hanging red lanterns, a dazzling sight especially at night.

The restaurant occupies a traditional courtyard in a long hutong, also lit and lined by ... you've guessed it. The private rooms are decorated by traditional Shandong Province paper-cuts, wall paintings in the style of Weifang (the home of Chinese kites), and replicas of the Bridge of Heaven's entertainment quarter.

The menu is a unique testament to the cuisine enjoyed by northern Chinese. Chefs prepare rustic specialties that come from recipes handed down through generations of ordinary Chinese. The vegetables are grown in the restaurant's own gardens, and the fresh seafood and fowl raised out back ... just as happens in the countryside.

Diners find their dishes here plenteous, delicious and relaxing--a venue not to be missed.
