"MEET IN BEIJING" Arts Festival
2002/04/01
This year's festival is a continuation of a themed program
of staged entertainment and culture, including conventional
arts, hosted by the Chinese government--a get-together that is
improved year by year by the appearance first in Beijing, then
other Chinese cities, of performances in many areas of
entertainment from all parts of the world.
Their appearance on stages all over Beijing, the starting
point for the festival, are a huge treat for audiences - their
rare chance to sample cultures often hugely different from what
they are used to at home. Top orchestras, ballet troupes,
song-and-dance ensembles, operatic virtuosos, solo
instrumentalists (and many more) are often greeted with rapture
in the Chinese capital and in the other cities they visit.
Likewise, lovers of conventional art enjoy good selection of
foreign exhibitions.
As this year's festival program shows, Chinese audiences
will again enjoy yet another comprehensive choice of various
forms of entertainment. In May, 2000, "Meet In Beijing" saw 28
troupes from 24 countries present a total of 109 stage
performances, six other events and six art exhibitions. In
April/May last year, no less than 60 troupes from 25 countries
presented a total of 82 stage performances, eight other shows
and four art exhibitions.

National Ballet of Cuba
As one of the best-known ballets in the world, the National
Ballet of Cuba stands out quite well in the modern culture
community of Latin America. It gains its world renown from the
actors' persistent pursuit in strict artistic techniques and
the diversity of aesthetic ideas held by its choreographers.
Based upon a respect for classical and romantic tradition,
National Ballet of Cuba encourages its dance designers to carry
out original creations, pursuing a good combination of national
character and modern spirit. It is actively involved in
international tour every year, aiming at spreading its art and
culture to the world stage.
Opera Sima Qian
Artists and audiences alike have warmly embraced Sima Qian,
the grand Chinese historical opera independently produced by
the Opera and Dance Company of Shanxi Province. With a lineup
of up to 100 players, the success of the opera depends largely
on exquisite stage design, the vibrant music composition and
the vivid acting. Experts held that this opera could be
credited as representative of the highest standard of Chinese
opera creation by far, bringing Chinese opera to a new level.
The premiere of this opera in Beijing will certainly exert
great influence on the national creation of Chinese opera and
meanwhile bring about positive social as well as economic
benefit.
