Culture Combines With Commerce in Wangfujing
2002/03/01
Visitors to Beijing from all over the world continue to
express surprise that the shopping mecca of Wangfujing
Street--the capital's most expensive chunk of land-- is also
rich in its collection of museums such as the Paleolithic, Sony
ExploraScience, and Treasured Antiques. Together, say
officials, the museums form a "golden delta" of Chinese
culture.
The museums reflect the high level of cooperation between
the government and individual companies. For example, the Sony
ExploraScience is invested by a Japanese entity, and the Museum
of Treasured Antiques is invested by Hong Kong tycoon Li
Ka-xing. The message is clear: shop 'til you drop at places
like the Oriental Plaza, Asia's largest shopping complex, then
recharge your batteries by visiting the museums.
