Emergency Landing (Jin Ji Po Jiang) (Fri. Mar. 8)

A commercial airplane takes off from a large municipal airport in China. The 137 passengers aboard are a mixture of Chinese and foreigners. A few minutes into the flight, the captain notices a malfunction in the landing gear, meaning that the plane will be unable to make a normal landing. He contacts the tower and is instructed to attempt to return to the airport. Will they be able to land or won't they? Soon the city's mayor and other dignitaries arrive on the scene to supply their own brand of leadership. The runways are laden with ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles. Meanwhile up in the air, the crew and passengers try to cope with the situation and the stewardess' valiantly perform their duties to keep everybody as calm and organized as possible. Will they land safely or won't they? And then what happens? Many people in China have wanted to know the answer to these questions. When this picture was shown in Shanghai last year it broke all previous records for ticket sales. It's as exciting a "blockbuster" as has ever been produced in China.

Zheng Cheng Gong (Zheng Cheng Gong)(Fri. Mar. 15)

This is a dramatization based on real historical events that took place during an earlier century. This is the first time this film is being shown in a public theater. During the Ming Dynasty, Zheng Cheng Gong graduates with high honors in China's capitol, Nanjing. He is singled out by the emperor and is appointed to a high position in his native Fujian Province. Upon his arrival, he has a dispute with his father who is an even higher official. The two men cannot agree on the proper policy towards Taiwan. The son wants to take it by force from the Dutch colonizers but the father prefers to let it be. The son prevails and goes on to lead a naval campaign against the far superior forces of the Dutch. During the military battles, he meets and falls in love with a native Taiwanese woman and they marry. He is ultimately successful on all fronts, becoming the first person in Chinese history to bring Taiwan under the control of the mainland government.

Genghis Khan's Mother (Cheng Ji Si Han De Ma Ma)(Fri. Mar. 22)

Set on the Mongolian plains, this film depicts the childhood and early years of one of history's pivotal characters. The director paid great attention to the locales, costumes and dialogue to create an historically accurate portrait of the epoch when Mongolia's great hero came of age. Swashbuckling horseback battles and stunning cinematography whirl around intimate scenes of a mother and her son. The story follows the main line of the Mongolian legend of Genghis Khan's childhood and coming of age. It is a dazzling display of primitive Mongolia. The harshness of the land and this long-ago era are movingly portrayed. The picture won the award for "Best Film" at the Philadelphia Film Festival in 1998.
