Shenzhen Rates as Santa's Top World Producer
2002/01/01
The southern Chinese city of Shenzhen has become the world's
largest exporter of Christmas products, including Christmas
trees. Officials at Shenzhen Foreign Economic and Trade Bureau
said that 70 percent of Christmas trees on the American market,
including the one installed at the White House, are from
Shenzhen.
The city currently has some 300 factories producing
Christmas gifts and other products, generating revenues
totaling US$2 billion each year. These exports are to the
United States, Australia, European countries, Japan and South
Korea. One Shenzhen official noted that all Christmas products
sold in China's increasing number of Wal-Mart stores are from
Shenzhen.
