Chinese Company to Sue Don King
2002/01/01
The once hot, then delayed, now cancelled heavyweight boxing
match between former world champion Evander Holyfield and
contender John Ruiz has left both the bout's Chinese organizer
and promoter Don King demanding compensation from each other.
Ruiz had pulled out of the Beijing contest because of an injury
sustained in training.
Chinese organizer Niu Lixin, chairman of Great Wall
International Sports Media Co. Ltd., recently announced that he
will sue King, though he is confident that the flamboyant
American will try to settle the dispute out of court. Niu
claims the Chinese side is in a favorable position, despite
King's own demand for a large amount of compensation from Great
Wall. Meanwhile, the fight went ahead in New York last month.
It ended in a draw, but Holyfield is said to be lodging an
appeal against the judges' decision because he insists that he
"did enough to win".
