Two New Models of Beijing's Favorite Vehicle on the Road

2001/03/01

Wealthier Beijing motorists' demand for Cherokee ve hicles, which along with ex patriates they have long acknowledged as one of the safest vehicles in China and elsewhere, will be further met with the first appearance in the capital, Shanghai and Guangdong markets later this month of two new models - the American-made 2001 Grand Cherokee versions named the Laredo and 4.0 Limited.

The news was announced by Beijing Jeep Corporation, a Sino-US joint venture, which also said the Beijing company will start manufacturing Grand Cherokees in July. The price of the Laredo on the Chinese market will be 590,000 yuan (US$71,000), and the 4.0 Limited 700,000 yuan ($84,000).

The Grand Cherokee is elegant yet robust - a stylish luxury vehicle more than capable of overcoming the toughest of cross-country challenges. With unrivalled off-road pedigree and capability, it embodies the rugged essence of the Jeep name that has kept the brand in the forefront of all-terrain achievements for almost six decades.
Powered by a lusty six-cylinder in-line engine, the 4.0 Limited has the power to complement its car-like handling with fluid and dynamic design. Jeep Grand Cherokee raised the level of luxury and capability in a sports-utility vehicle to new levels when it was redesigned for 1999, and has been collecting kudos ever since. In fact, the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee earned the R.L. Polk award for owner loyalty.

In addition, Grand Cherokee has already garnered almost 20 US industry awards since its introduction in September 1999, among them the "North American Truck of the Year"; "Petersen's Off-Road & 4-Wheel Drive"; the "4X4 of the Year"; and Four Wheeler magazine's "Four Wheeler of the Year". On its introduction to Europe, the right-hand drive version was named"Best Off-Roader" by Great Britain's high-circulation What Car? magazine.

Grand Cherokee owners have even more reason to remain loyal to the vehicle with the introduction of the 2001 model. Grand Cherokee offers a new five-speed automatic transmission with its award-winning 4.7-liter PowerTech V-8 engine. The new 545RFE provides a second overdrive gear for increased highway fuel economy, and reduced engine noise during highway speeds.
