Drivers Can Win Cold War
2001/01/01
Trying to start a car from cold in freezing weather is every
driverÕs nightmare, especially if the vehicle is old and its
engine in need of a major service, including new oil, points
and spark plugs. But getting the engine to burst into life can
be made easier if you park your car facing, and as close to, a
building as possible, thus lessening the amount of cold air
that blows directly onto the engine and causes the start-up
problem in the first place. One possible remedy is to cover the
engine block with an old, thick blanket.
Car door-locks can also freeze at this time of year, so
occasionally squirt some light oil into the keyholes.
If the road is icy and you have difficulty pulling away from
stationary through lack of traction, try using a high gear
while keeping the throttle at its lowest. If you still find
yourself going nowhere fast, place some grass and twigs under
the rear wheels.
A reminder: check that you have adequate anti-freeze in your
radiator.
